NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson 2016 SAT

Executive Summary

A Kongsberg EM2040 multibeam and an EM710 MKII multibeam were installed aboard NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson during an extended shipyard period at the Coast Guard yard in Curtis Bay in Baltimore, MD during the spring and summer of 2016. After a short stay at the Atlantic Marine Operations Center in Norfolk, VA, the ship proceeded with acceptance testing of the new survey systems in the areas between Norfolk and Hudson Canyon during the third week of October, 2016, with the assistance of Office of Coast Survey and Kongsberg personnel.

RV Bat Galim 2016 System Review

From January 31st to February 4th, 2016 a Shipboard Acceptance Testing (SAT) was conducted on the R/V Bat Galim, owned by the Ministry of National Infrastructures, Energy and Water Resource of Israel and operated by Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research, on the newly installed Kongsberg Maritime (KM) EM302 (30 kHz) and EM2040 (200 kHz, 300 kHz, and 400 kHz) multibeam echosounders. These systems were thoroughly reviewed for system geometry, calibration, configuration, and performance during this acceptance period. Documented in this report are:

 

RV Bat Galim 2016 Acoustic Test Report

During the at-sea test on BAT GALIM, the main objective was to determine ship acoustic characteristics and to assess potential impacts to sonar performance from all acoustic sources. The primary sonars of interest were the newly installed Kongsberg EM 302 and EM 2040 multibeam systems. The following evaluations were accomplished as part this testing:

  1. The overall noise levels of BAT GALIM were measured and characterized with special test sensors and internal noise routines inherent in the Kongsberg sonars.
  2. Propeller cavitation characteristics were assessed.

Summary and Recommendations

  • Heading into the 2015 operating season, the EM302 and associated sensors aboard E/V Nautilus are working well compared to previous evaluations and to other EM302 systems examined recently. The patch test showed no pitch or yaw bias and only a very slight residual angular offset for roll, indicating no major changes to the system geometry.

Conclusions

  • The EM 122 receive array had a bad preamplifier board that was causing the entire array to have higher noise levels and to exhibit non-uniform distribution of noise characteristics.2.The EM 122 receive array module 6 was out of phase with the rest of the sonar receive array.

Healy 2014 Acoustic Test Report

Gates Acoustic Services was tasked by SCRIPPS Institute of Oceanography to investigate and quantify acoustic issues associated with operation of the USCGC HEALY (WAGBG20). An at-sea investigation was accomplished during ship operations in deep water out of Nome, Alaska on August 13-24, 2014.

Sikuliaq 2014 Acoustic Test Report

Gates Acoustic Services was tasked by University of Alaska, Fairbanks, to investigate and quantify acoustic issues associated with operation of the R/V SIKULIAQ. An at-sea investigation was accomplished during ship operations in deep water out of San Juan, Puerto Rico on September 12-18, 2014.

Kilo Moana 2012 Acoustic Test Report

KILO MOANA’s acoustic signature was higher than previous acoustical data due to electronic noise interference. The levels in the EM 122 sonar operational frequency of 12 kHz were also higher than historic data. A significant problem was noted with numerous elements of the EM 122 sonar array that is believed to be associated with electronic background noise. Electronic noise was determined to be the major deficiency during this acoustic trial.

Kilo Moana 2010 Acoustic Test Report

KILO MOANA’s acoustic signature was comparable to previous acoustical data with one noted exception. The levels in the EM 122 sonar operational frequency of 12 kHz were similar to historic data. A new problem was discovered that was associated with engine and switching room air handler cooling systems. This problem created 4,000 Hz harmonics from the fundamental up through 80 kHz (the limit of onboard instrumentation). An additional problem was noted with numerous elements of the EM 122 sonar array that is believed to be associated with electronic background noise.

Melville 2012 Acoustic Test Report

R/V MELVILLE acoustic signature was successfully measured during this acoustic test. The levels of the EM 122 were controlled by a combination of propeller and anti-roll tank transients.

The general acoustic levels of MELVILLE were good and should produce excellent bathymetric data results:

  • At low speeds (up to 8 knots) sonar levels were controlled by a combination of sea-state and local machinery
  • At mid speeds (8 to 10 knots) sonar levels were controlled by hydrodynamic flow noise

 

Atlantis 2011 Acoustic Test Report

The acoustic signature of R/V ATLANTIS was successfully measured during this acoustic test. The levels of the EM 122 were controlled by a combination of flow noise and gondola cavitation. Higher sea state data was also influenced by bubble sweepdown effects.

The general acoustic levels of ATLANTIS with the new gondola mounted EM 122 sonar system were good and should produce excellent bathymetric data results:

  • At low speeds (from DIW to 350 RPM), sonar levels were controlled by a combination of sea‐state and local machinery.

 

Langseth 2011 Acoustic Test Report

R/V MARCUS G. LANGSETH’s acoustic signature was successfully measured during this acoustic test. The levels of the EM 122 were controlled by propeller cavitation. The quietest vessel condition/speed was when the controllable pitch propellers were set to 85 percent pitch with an engine speed of 600 RPM. This yielded a ship speed of 10 knots and a sonar level of 52 dB. The seismic system created high levels when it was operating.

NOAA Ship Ruben Lasker ME70 Integration Testing

Executive Summary

The purpose of Coast Survey’s participation in this cruise was to verify the installation and configuration of the ME70 and ancillary systems; validate the current Hypack implementation of the ME70 bottom detection code; and provide operational guidance to the future operators of this system. NOAA Ship Fairweather Launch 2017 SAT

Executive Summary

We installed four Kongsberg EM2040 multibeam echo sounders, one on each of Fairweather’s
hydrographic survey launches during the spring of 2017 in Newport, OR. We accomplished the test and
qualification of these systems on Puget Sound from May 22 through May 26. Conditions were generally agreeable for testing with some wind driven chop potentially affecting a limited set of noise tests. All systems were successfully integrated and measured performance was in compliance with vendor specifications and suitable for conducting NOAA hydrographic surveys.

2016 Neil Armstrong Sea Acceptance Trails

The R/V Neil Armstrong is a new vessel operated by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) equipped with Kongsberg Maritime (KM) EM122 (12 kHz) and EM710 (70-100 kHz) multibeam echosounders. The hardware installation, calibration, software configuration, and performance of these systems were evaluated during a sea acceptance trial involving WHOI, KM, Multibeam Advisory Committee (MAC), and NOAA Office of Coast Survey personnel.

RV Hugh Sharp 2016 QAT Visit

The R/V Hugh R. Sharp is equipped with a Reson 7125 SVP2 (200/400 kHz) multibeam echosounder installed on a drop keel and an Applanix POS-MV 320 positioning and attitude system. Traditionally, survey planning and data acquisition are handled using Hypack HYSWEEP software installed on the RESON acquisition machine.

Hugh R. Sharp 2012 Sea Acceptance Report

The Reson 7125 system is correctly installed and integrated with the POSMV and Hypack acquisition system and there is no indication of errors in the integration of the systems. There remains uncertainty in the absolute accuracy of the depths due to the inadequately documented sonar z-offset calculation. High quality surveys were collected during the cruise immediately following Hurricane Sandy (Nov. 10, 2012) and attest to the quality of the installation and the integration of the survey system components.

Executive Summary
A Kongsberg EM710 multibeam echosounder was installed on the NOAA Ship Fairweather by Bay Ship and Yacht Co. of Alameda, CA in December, 2014. This mapping sonar replaced a Reson 8160 and a Reson 7111.

The performance of the EM710 was evaluated during sea‐trials from 9 February to 13 February, 2015. The performance of this system as installed and integrated meets the manufacturer specification and is adequate to meet the intended charting mission. All modes of operation were tested between 50 and 500 meters.
