2020 Okeanos Explorer EM304 SAT

Summary

  1. The Okeanos Explorer received a Kongsberg EM304 multibeam echosounder topside upgrade over the 2019-20 winter maintenance period. No changes were made to the TX or RX arrays (installed in 2007 and 2018, respectively) or the Applanix POS MV positioning and attitude system.
  2. Sea acceptance testing (SAT) was conducted during EX2000 (March 3-8, 2020) with Kongsberg, NOAA, and OMAO personnel on board to complete the following procedures:
    • Review EM304 and POS MV system geometry

Rainier

NOAA Ship Rainier 2013 Multibeam System Review

Sensor geometry reconfiguration was successfully completed and tested on Rainier and a 14 ms orientation time delay was applied in SIS to accommodate an observed latency in the transmission of motion data from the POSMV to SIS. We feel that these two modifications will improve the data quality with the geometry reconfiguration allowing for successful application of TrueHeave in postcprocessing and the time-delay configuration improving the data quality of soundings as corrected in real-time by SIS.

NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson 2016 SAT

Executive Summary

A Kongsberg EM2040 multibeam and an EM710 MKII multibeam were installed aboard NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson during an extended shipyard period at the Coast Guard yard in Curtis Bay in Baltimore, MD during the spring and summer of 2016. After a short stay at the Atlantic Marine Operations Center in Norfolk, VA, the ship proceeded with acceptance testing of the new survey systems in the areas between Norfolk and Hudson Canyon during the third week of October, 2016, with the assistance of Office of Coast Survey and Kongsberg personnel.

 

Bat Galim

RV Bat Galim 2016 System Review

From January 31st to February 4th, 2016 a Shipboard Acceptance Testing (SAT) was conducted on the R/V Bat Galim, owned by the Ministry of National Infrastructures, Energy and Water Resource of Israel and operated by Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research, on the newly installed Kongsberg Maritime (KM) EM302 (30 kHz) and EM2040 (200 kHz, 300 kHz, and 400 kHz) multibeam echosounders. These systems were thoroughly reviewed for system geometry, calibration, configuration, and performance during this acceptance period. Documented in this report are:

 

RV Bat Galim 2016 Acoustic Test Report

During the at-sea test on BAT GALIM, the main objective was to determine ship acoustic characteristics and to assess potential impacts to sonar performance from all acoustic sources. The primary sonars of interest were the newly installed Kongsberg EM 302 and EM 2040 multibeam systems. The following evaluations were accomplished as part this testing:

  1. The overall noise levels of BAT GALIM were measured and characterized with special test sensors and internal noise routines inherent in the Kongsberg sonars.
  2. Propeller cavitation characteristics were assessed.

  • As it stands now, the EM302 and associated sensors are working well as compared to other EM302s evaluated recently. The patch test revealed very slight residual angular offsets, indicating a successful reinstallation of the MRU and no apparent change to any other component of the system.

Summary and Recommendations

  • Heading into the 2015 operating season, the EM302 and associated sensors aboard E/V Nautilus are working well compared to previous evaluations and to other EM302 systems examined recently. The patch test showed no pitch or yaw bias and only a very slight residual angular offset for roll, indicating no major changes to the system geometry.

 

Fairweather

NOAA Ship Fairweather Launch 2017 SAT

Executive Summary

We installed four Kongsberg EM2040 multibeam echo sounders, one on each of Fairweather’s
hydrographic survey launches during the spring of 2017 in Newport, OR. We accomplished the test and
qualification of these systems on Puget Sound from May 22 through May 26. Conditions were generally agreeable for testing with some wind driven chop potentially affecting a limited set of noise tests. All systems were successfully integrated and measured performance was in compliance with vendor specifications and suitable for conducting NOAA hydrographic surveys.

NOAA Ship Fairweather 2015 SAT

Executive Summary
A Kongsberg EM710 multibeam echosounder was installed on the NOAA Ship Fairweather by Bay Ship and Yacht Co. of Alameda, CA in December, 2014. This mapping sonar replaced a Reson 8160 and a Reson 7111.

The performance of the EM710 was evaluated during sea‐trials from 9 February to 13 February, 2015. The performance of this system as installed and integrated meets the manufacturer specification and is adequate to meet the intended charting mission. All modes of operation were tested between 50 and 500 meters.

Falkor Fall 2014 Quality Assessment Report

The EM302 and EM710 multibeams were successfully calibrated and verified for use with both the loaner Seapath MRU and the new POS MV. Angular offsets were small except for the roll bias for both the EM710 and EM302. As both multibeam systems have the same large roll bias, it is likely the result of a shift in the mounting angle of the MRU. Both SIS acquisition systems have been updated with the new calibration results.

Falkor Spring 2014 Quality Assessment Report

The transducer impedances are similar to baseline measurements in 2012 and with those taken in 2013. Transducer conditions, based on these tests, are acceptable and there is no sign of degradation of the transducer arrays.

Noise levels for the EM710 remain unchanged and very low. Noise levels for the EM302 have increased at higher speeds though they remain low when the ship is stationary in the water, suggesting that the increase is associated with flow noise and/or the propulsion system.

Falkor 2013 Multibeam Echosounder System Review

The transducer impedances are similar to baseline measurements with exception of the EM710 transducer impedances. This latter potential issue is being examined with the manufacturer but we do not feel, after consultation with the manufacturer, that there is any cause for concern. Noise levels have not changed significantly since the 2012 trials in “Science” mode. Review of the noise results by Tim Gates indicates that there are some modules reporting higher noise levels compared to measurements taken by Gates in early 2012 and may warrant a closer investigation

Falkor 2012 Multibeam Echosounder System Review

RV Falkor is equipped with Kongsberg Maritime (KM) EM302 and EM710 multibeam echosounders (MBES). Both systems underwent Sea Acceptance Trials (SATs) in May 2012 in Sognefjord, Norway. The bathymetric and topographic constraints imposed by the fjord limited the ability to fully test the EM302. Additional system testing was conducted during a second set of trials while in transit from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK to Nuuk, Greenland in July 2012.

Langseth 2011 Acoustic Test Report

R/V MARCUS G. LANGSETH’s acoustic signature was successfully measured during this acoustic test. The levels of the EM 122 were controlled by propeller cavitation. The quietest vessel condition/speed was when the controllable pitch propellers were set to 85 percent pitch with an engine speed of 600 RPM. This yielded a ship speed of 10 knots and a sonar level of 52 dB. The seismic system created high levels when it was operating.

R/V MELVILLE acoustic signature was successfully measured during this acoustic test. The levels of the EM 122 were controlled by a combination of propeller and anti-roll tank transients.

The general acoustic levels of MELVILLE were good and should produce excellent bathymetric data results:

  • At low speeds (up to 8 knots) sonar levels were controlled by a combination of sea-state and local machinery
  • At mid speeds (8 to 10 knots) sonar levels were controlled by hydrodynamic flow noise
