In late 2025, R/V Thomas G. Thompson completed a major shipyard upgrade in Singapore focused on enhancing its acoustic mapping capabilities, including installation of a new gondola for improved noise reduction and replacement of the EM302 multibeam system with a deepwater-capable EM124. The upgrade expands the vessel’s seafloor and water-column mapping capacity and introduces new subbottom profiling capabilities aligned with other Global Class research vessels. Sea Acceptance Testing of the new systems was conducted in the Sulu Sea with support from UW, USM, Kongsberg engineers, and the Multibeam Advisory Committee (MAC), which provided remote technical oversight throughout the testing process.
